The Sitting Room About The Sitting Room

Since 1981, the privately funded Sitting Room, with its collection of more than 7,000 donated volumes and many magazines and small press books, has been "a place of solace and comfort in a brash and busy world."

The Sitting Room is open to all responsible members of the community who are genuinely interested in women's issues and achievements. Housed in a Cotati office building, the three cozy rooms offer a quiet place to browse, research, read, write, and converse--yes, here you can talk, and even eat, without any reprimand! Library users check out books designated for circulation by the "blue dot," according to the honor system explained at the check-out desk. To become a "sitter" with your own key, please telephone J.J. Wilson at 707 795-9028 or email her at boxcar@sonic.net.

The Sitting Room also sponsors special events, such as readings and conversations with writers, along with on-going writers’ workshops and book discussion groups, and the Fall and Spring schedules are posted elsewhere on this site. However, the individual reader is always welcome here whatever is going on and there is a Quiet Room for those seeking refuge from meetings and talk.

It seems to work, the easy balance of congeniality, privacy, and trust unique to our The Sitting Room.
