A Library for Browsing and Research
When we started thirty years ago, we stocked many books with second copies that people could take out on the honor system. Back then many books by and about women were hard to find. That situation has changed significantly.
With the move in 2011, we eliminated borrowing and refined our holdings to a strong basic collection amplified by special collections We no longer follow the "blue dot duplicate lending" system.
HOWEVER, we have a small lending collection, which is available on a bookshelf to the right as you enter the front hallway. Take and return when you are done. We use the honor system. No paperwork!
You are welcome to enjoy the library as a place to browse and do research. Bring your computer and enjoy our free wi-fi.
Here is a sample of what you can find, from the ordinary to the obscure:
POETRY: In the Jane Flood Memorial Room, with shelves full of books, many of them hard-to-find and limited edition chap books.
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN WRITERS: A collection of books in translation from around the world. A good place to find a new writer to explore.
LESBIAN HISTORICAL LITERATURE: Some of those harder-to-find books. Do your research in the SR.
COOKBOOKS: The founders love to cook, so of course there are many examples to explore. In the kitchen, of course.
WOMEN WRITERS' FILES: Articles, interviews, reviews from many sources. In the Poetry room closet.
LOCAL WRITERS COLLECTION: See the rich variety produced right in our region. In the main sitting room.
WOMEN WRITERS, BIOGRAPHIES AND LETTERS: In the Writers' Room, where you can be inspired by their struggles with the craft while you work on your own book.
NOTABLE WOMEN: Though some wrote, most on these shelves are distinguished for accomplishments in other endeavors, such as politics, sport, activism, and more. In the big room off the kitchen.
VIRGINIA WOOLF: Our one woman writer covered in depth, in thanks for telling us each to have a room of our own. In the big room off the kitchen.
THE SITTING ROOM ANNUALS: Our anthology, with copies for you to purchase with a $5 donation. In the big room off the kitchen.
