JOIN OUR CREW OF VOLUNTEERS

Friday afternoons at the Sitting Room have developed into quite jolly times for the volunteers to gather to work on various projects. (I think we are drawn by the magnetic power of “The Librarians” – Raye Lynn Thomas and Karen Petersen – who by their very demeanor encourage ideas and action.)
Lindamay (who works with the obituary collection) usually arrives first and then Karen, Raye Lynn, Eloise, Joyce, JJ, Krista, and our wonderful SSU interns, Abby and Victoria.
Tea time can stretch out a bit if there is good Vitamin G, ( i.e. gossip, a necessary component of any diet), but pretty soon everyone gets down to work. There is a kind of BUZZ in the usually quiet Sitting Room.
Mind you, other volunteers show up at other times during the week – for example, Vickie Scott who works during the day, but sometimes donates one of her vacation days to work on the Irish lit Archives or order the useful collection of How to Write books. Clarice Stasz pops in to tend the Women Writers Biography shelf and related collections.
If you enjoy fiddling around with books and/or archival work – with NO pressure & frequent tea breaks—please devote some of your time to the many projects awaiting attention here at Curtis Drive. Should you want to volunteer or even just to sound out the possibility of volunteering, please telephone J.J. Wilson at 795-9028 and/or email her, boxcar@sonic.net
For example, we need Tenders to give attention to the small Drama Section and to the rather large Poetry Room. To be a Tender takes some creative thinking and some consultation, but not much actual physical labor or time; consistent attention would be the best job description.
The Archives always need more archive divers who would work with Eloise van Tassel and J.J. Wilson to keep those fascinating files up to date.
One of our most interesting sections in the library is the International Women Writers. Barbara Lesch McCaffry, its main curator, needs international writers' assistant. Join her in developing a more global vision of literature to help her in the selection, the data entry, and the tricky “geography” of the shelving.
We have several librarians working with us to catalog the collection into the online Sitting Room Library Catalog. They are always willing to train volunteers to help them in this task that somehow never becomes routine, given the quality of the books accepted for the permanent collection.
