Contribute to our annual publication

We hope people are still interested in writing their thoughts about HOME, even after been sequestered therein for so long. We have received only a few excellent and evocative contributions so far, including  one painting that is charming! Of homes in good times and bad. Of visiting a writer’s home.  Of the many places the writer has tried to call home. Join in! All contributions that meet the entry requirements are accepted. Click for the Publish page to see details.

REBECCA WEST: OUR NEXT RE-DISCOVERY PROJECT

Picture
Have you ever thought of what pen name/alias you might choose?  Cecily Isabel Fairfield did and it was a much more interesting name:  REBECCA WEST.  Taken from a figure in Ibsen’s play “Rosmerholm”, she made it her own and if you are not familiar with that name, you’ve got some fascinating territory to explore.
We had planned events around her writings, now cancelled.
Meanwhile, enjoy her on your own! We suggest The Fountain Overflows, a 1957 best seller, where West transmuted her own volatile childhood into enduring art. This is an unvarnished but affectionate picture of an extraordinary family, in which a remarkable stylist and powerful intelligence surveys the elusive boundaries of childhood and adulthood, freedom and dependency, the ordinary and the arcane.
Join a Zoom discussion on Wednesday, January 20, 2-4.

WE HAVE A SMALL LENDING LIBRARY--when we reopen

Picture
Think about borrowing a book from our Circulation Shelves, along the entrance hallway.  There is an overload of duplicated fiction to tempt you, and to the left, in the renovated closet shelving area, find nonfiction.
We use an honor system, so borrow one and return later. They all have the SR stamp to remind you where their home shelf resides.
If you are really stuck, return the book by mail: The Sitting Room, PO Box 838, Penngrove, 94951.

WHEN WE ARE OPEN; HOW TO GET THE ENTRY CODE

Picture
Your Sitting Room is open access from 9 am to 5 pm, every day but Sunday.  Other times may be requested.  If a Workshop is in the living room, enter anyway and enjoy the rest of the space.  In all cases, you need the key code, which is given you when you take a brief tour of the premises.  To schedule an appointment, email sittingroomlibrary@gmail.com. Check our map for directions and parking rules.

Please, please
for safety's sake, never give the entry code to someone else. To ensure proper use of the space, new visitors must go through a tour.

WI-FI AND A LIBRARY CATALOG.

Picture
We used to have a computer available. But now everyone has a tablet, smart phone, or lap top. Bring it and use our wifi.

Want to know whether our collection has a book?  Check Sappho, our online catalog, at the SR or from home.
